This sounds like a complicated and rather delicate issue, and we’re sorry you’re going through it. To answer your question, we’ve never heard of a situation like this happening—but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t. People will be people and, unfortunately, not all of them are honest.

To get help, we’d suggest you contact the Indiana Department of Insurance and let them know you’d like to submit a complaint against your previous insurer. (Use the “Contact Us” link on the left side of the page.) Explain the situation and let them know you think you’ve been a victim of insurance fraud. The DOI was set up to deal with situations like these, and they will know the best course of action to help you. They may ask you to fill out some paperwork, write a letter explaining what happened and/or testify against the company that held your policy.

One thing you can be sure of: They will treat you fairly, handle your complaint subjectively and investigate your claim thoroughly!

I hope that helps. Please let us know how it goes, and what kind of resolution you receive.
